What is a digital business card?
A digital business card is a small web page with your name, role, contact details and links. People open it by scanning a QR code, tapping an NFC tag or following a link, and they can save your details to their phone.
Unlike a printed card, it can be updated at any time, it can hold unlimited links, and it tells you whether anyone opened it.
How does it work?
You create a card on a platform. It gets a link such as yourname on the platform's domain, and a QR code that encodes that link. When someone scans the QR code, their phone opens your card in the browser. No app is needed.
A Save contact button downloads a vCard file, the standard format every phone uses for contacts. One tap and you are in their address book.
What should a good card include?
A clear photo and name, your role and company, one sentence on what you do, and no more than five or six links. The most important action should be the first thing the reader sees.
Add a way to reach you that does not depend on them saving anything, such as a Call button or a WhatsApp link, because many people will not save your contact on the spot.
Features that separate good platforms from average ones
Look past templates. Check whether you can show different content to different visitors, whether your card works in your visitor's language, whether export of your data is locked behind a paid plan, and whether the platform emails the people who open your card.
Also check pricing honestly: free plans are usually limited by number of cards, branding and analytics, so decide which of those you can live with.
Common mistakes
Putting too many links on a card, using a photo that is too dark, skipping a call-to-action, and printing a QR code that is too small to scan. Test the card on two phones before you print anything.
